สันหนอกวัว

San Nok Wua

The highest peak in Kanchanaburi province, inside Khao Laem National Park. San Nok Wua stands 1,767 metres above sea level — a long, broad ridge that rises like the hump of an ox, which is exactly what the Thai name means.

There are two viewpoints: Little Nok Wua and Big Nok Wua. Mornings bring a vast sea of mist; evenings bring one of the finest sunsets in the region.

The walk is about 9 kilometres. The trail runs through bamboo forest, with flat stretches at the foot of the hills giving way to a rhythm of climbs and descents, and one last steep pull before you reach the campsite.

Itinerary

Itinerary
  1. 20.30Meet at Lotus Lat Phrao (BTS Ha Yaek Lat Phrao, Exit 4), in the outdoor car park
  2. 21.00Once everyone is ready, set off for Kanchanaburi. If you prefer to join along the way, we can pick up at Sai Tai Mai, Nakhon Pathom on the main road, Ban Pong or Kanchanaburi.
  3. 03.00Arrive at the Pom Pi viewpoint around 3 a.m. and get a little sleep
  4. 07.00Wake up, freshen up and have breakfast at the park (this meal is at your own expense)
  5. 08.00Register and weigh any gear you are handing to the porters
  6. 08.30After registration, a four-wheel-drive takes us to the trailhead, about 30 minutes
  7. 09.00At the trailhead, start walking to the campsite: about 9 km, roughly 4 to 6 hours. The trail alternates between flat ground, descents and climbs, crossing four or five hills, including Noen Ma Thoi and Noen Prap Sian
  8. 12.30Stop for lunch on the way (meal 1, packed lunch)
  9. 15.00Reach the campsite, drop your pack and rest. Then find a spot to pitch your tent near our camp
  10. 16.30Walk up for the evening light and sunset at Little San Nok Wua, and the San Nok Wua Kanchanaburi summit sign
  11. 18.30Dinner (meal 2), introductions and a relaxed evening. The campsite can be windy. There is a natural pit toilet at the campsite, used together with the park toilet kit (50 baht per kit). There is no shower at the campsite; a dry wash with a damp towel or wet wipes works well, and please keep your rubbish with you and carry it back down. Drinking water on the mountain is clean filtered water and we bring a shared filter for everyone. If you would rather not drink filtered water, bring your own supply and carry it yourself.
  12. 06.00Wake early for the view and the sunrise at Big San Nok Wua, and with luck a sea of mist (weather permitting)
  13. 08.00Coffee and breakfast at camp (meal 3). From 08.30 to 09.00, pack your things, help take down the tents and break camp. Then we start the walk down, 9 km back the way we came, at your own pace. A four-wheel-drive meets us at the end of the trail to take us back to the Pom Pi park office (cold drinks and fruit are on sale at the pick-up point)
  14. 12.00Back at Pom Pi: shower, change and have lunch at your leisure (this meal is at your own expense)
  15. 14.00Once everything is done, the van heads back to Bangkok. Whether we stop for dinner or at a souvenir shop depends on how the journey is going
  16. 21.00Arrive safely back in Bangkok

Notes

Before you decide

  • Difficulty: About 9 km from the trailhead to the campsite, roughly 4–6 hours. The trail alternates between flat ground, descents and climbs, crossing four or five hills including Noen Ma Thoi and Noen Prap Sian. The walk back is the same 9 km, and a four-wheel-drive meets you at the end of the trail.
  • Getting there: The trip runs with a minimum of 9 travellers. Seats in the van are allocated in the order deposits are received.
  • Camp life: Everyone on the trip helps out: pitching camp, setting up tents, cooking and washing up.
  • Food: Tell us in advance about any food you do or do not eat. Halal, vegetarian and vegan diets are all fine — we just need to know.
  • The schedule and timings may change where sensible — weather, safety, traffic and the trip leader’s judgement all come into it, always with the group’s interests first.

Preparation

What to bring

  • Tent and sleeping bag — bring your own or rent from us (ask for rental prices by message or on the LINE page)
  • Clothing: a quick-drying hiking or sports shirt, hiking trousers or long leggings (jeans are not recommended)
  • Hiking boots or trainers, plus easy shoes or sandals to change into at camp
  • Any personal medication, insect repellent, electrolyte powder
  • Torch, power bank and charging cable
  • Warm layers, and a rain jacket during the rainy season
  • Personal items you need, snacks and drinks as you like
  • Wet wipes, tissues and a bag for your own rubbish
  • A change of clothes for the journey home — anything you are not carrying can stay in the van

Porters

  • Private porters are available at 100 baht per kilo return. Please arrange this in the group LINE chat before departure.
  • Your own backpack, hammock, tent and sleeping bag count as personal gear — if you bring them, you carry them.

Klukfoontour cannot accept responsibility for costs arising from events outside our control — for example the cancellation or delay of your own journey to the meeting point, flight delays or cancellations, protests, strikes, civil unrest, natural hazards, traffic and accidents, political events in Thailand or abroad, war, and anything else beyond our control.
  3. If a government-declared lockdown closes the country or makes travel impossible, deposits and trip payments are held as credit towards the same trip once travel resumes.

  5. We cannot accept responsibility for a medical emergency arising from a pre-existing condition that was not caused by an accident on the trip.
  6. We cannot accept responsibility for belongings lost to theft, for accidents caused by a traveller’s own carelessness, or for baggage lost or damaged by an airline.
  7. If immigration in Thailand or abroad refuses you exit or entry, no refund can be given under any circumstances.
  8. Once you pay a deposit or the full amount, we take it that you have read and accepted the conditions set out above.
